My Pocket Crutches

They say that a cat has nine lives. I truly believe that, as I’m writing this book, I am currently working on life number sixteen and still counting. So many people have told me to write my autobiography after hearing just a brief summary of my God story, but I always felt that it would be a boring read. That’s because I experienced it one day at a time, with all of its daily details, while they’d only heard a brief synopsis of my experience, strength and hope. Once you have this book in your hands, it will be apparent that I succumbed to their wishes, and I have written down a little more than I cared to about my journey.I’ve inserted my personal recollections before many of the chapters, providing a brief overview of what it was like, what happened, and what it’s like now. However, the real POW of this book is in the collection of “Pearls Of Wisdom” that I have gathered during more than forty years of attendance at Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, although I was slipping and sliding through the first four years. Whenever I heard something said, or read something written, that struck me as a profound gem that I needed to hold on to, I would copy it down. I wrote on napkins, on coffee cups, on the palm of my hand, anyplace I could, to capture these thoughts and quotations for my own personal future reference. They have served me well over the decades, and they continue to have great meaning and value in my sober life today.As I am now entering my latter years, I realize that there are many others, not just alcoholics, who could benefit from this compilation of pearls.
